Food Is Love: Why We're Supporting Farm Share This Give Miami Day
At my childhood table, love wasn’t always said out loud, but it was served.
My Dominican dad made the best mofongo: fried, mashed green plantains mixed with garlic, a touch of sour orange, and pork cracklings, savory, crisp, and delicious.
My mom was a stay-at-home parent who always made sure we had fresh food, from simmering the beans to making seasonal fruit juices from scratch. She taught me that feeding others is a form of devotion.
That belief stuck with me.
As a kid, I was the one constantly inviting friends over, offering whatever we had, usually cookies with my mom’s homemade seasonal fruit juice.
In college, even when money was tight, I cooked. I hosted potlucks, brought snacks to study groups, and made sure everyone had a plate. Food has always been my way of connecting, showing up, and saying, 'You matter.'
I’ve been fortunate to grow up in a home where food meant comfort and consistency.
But I know that’s not the reality for everyone. That’s why this Give Miami Day, I’m supporting Farm Share, a nonprofit bringing fresh food to families across Florida.
🌴 What’s Give Miami Day?
Give Miami Day is one of the largest annual giving movements in the country, organized by The Miami Foundation. For 24 hours, people across South Florida (and beyond) come together to support the local nonprofits doing vital work in our communities.
This year, the official date is Thursday, November 20th, but Early Giving is already open, so you can donate today.
💛 Why Farm Share?
Farm Share’s mission is beautifully simple: No Floridian should go hungry, and no food should go to waste.
They’ve distributed over 100 million pounds of food across all 67 counties in Florida. What’s more, they’ve never charged for food—and never will.
This mission aligns deeply with my values. I believe access to fresh, nourishing food is a basic right, not a privilege. Especially in a state as abundant as ours.
Every dollar raised goes directly to Farm Share and helps feed families across our state.
$25 can help Farm Share deliver fresh food to those who need it most.
Your gift, big or small, becomes a meal, a moment of care, a reminder that someone sees them.
If food is love, let’s share it generously.
✨ A Quick Note:
We’re taking a short break from our Designing Through the Senses series this month to focus on this beautiful opportunity to give back.
We'll be back next month with more reflections on how sensory design shapes connection, but for now, thank you for helping us put food on the table for those who need it.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for believing, like I do, that the table should always have room for one more.
